Helston Once a Year Club's charity auction

Wednesday, October 01, 2008, 14:25

LOTS ranging from a painting of Michael Caine as gangster Jack Carter – who would knock your teeth out as soon as look at you – to a voucher from a dentist who would repair the damage, meant that a further £3,800 was raised by a Helston club for cancer and leukaemia in children.

It was the annual Once a Year Club's auction on Sunday, which came a couple of months after its annual money-spinning charity bicycle ride.

Organiser Karen Anderton was particularly pleased with the amount raised, if not quite so happy with the weather which, she believed, probably kept a few potential bidders away.

"We could have done with a few more people there really, but still made £3,800," she said.

As usual, former mayor Ronnie Williams grabbed the gavel and did the auctioneering bit, dealing with more than 60 lots.

Among the successful bids were £400 for a signed Lewis Hamilton photo and £110 for a signed rugby shirt, courtesy of England world cup winner Josh Lewsey. Another world cup winner, football's Gordon Banks, provided a signed photo which raised £75.

The Get Carter painting realised £150, while a tooth-whitening voucher from Meneage Dental raised £145; a basket of strawberries from The Grange went for £40 and a chocolate cake from Ruth's for £90.

A Mystery Box went for £100 to Jason Ballard who donated it back to the auction, then it went to Jason Robertson for £105.

Karen said: "One of the final lots was a bag of tomatoes – this year appearing with a cucumber – which I think threw Ronnie a bit (and obviously invited many suggestions from the crowd). I made a note to myself to get someone else to hold the cucumber next year."

Whereas last year a similar bag of tomatoes went for £130, this time it reached £41.

Karen thanked all the businesses in Helston and Porthleven who were as generous as ever once again this year – and all the bidders and buyers who gave up their Sunday afternoon to support the club's 20th anniversary.

"It was fantastic weather outside, and, aware of a 'credit crunch', people were still very generous with their bidding – which is very much appreciated by both myself and CLIC Sargent. Thanks also to Helston Football Club for hosting the day again and of course Ronnie, who gives up so much of his time to support local charities – I'm glad we are one of them."

Joan Morrish, chairman of CLIC Sargent (Cornwall Branch) attended this year and said a few words about how CLIC Sargent still requires additional funding from outside the county to maintain its level of services in Cornwall. She thanked her helpers, Lee, Ryan, Kyle and in particular Holly.
