Sunday, July 05, 2009, 10:51

A 55-year-old woman, believed to be from the Hayle area, has died after being struck by a train.

Police and ambulance crews were called out to the Trevassick Hill area on the outskirts of Hayle just before 10pm on Friday after receiving reports that a train had hit someone.

The incident is now being investigated by the British Transport Police, based at Truro Railway Station, although the woman's death is not being treated as suspicious.

The woman has yet to be named but is thought to be from the local area. Her death has been referred to the coroner's office.

Train services on the Cornish main line were delayed for about two hours following the woman's death.

British Transport Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, or anyone with any information, to contact them on 01872 276891.
