UPDATED at 11.30am:

Two horses have died and two people have been taken to hospital following a serious road traffic collision in St Agnes this morning.

The incident, which happened at 7.20am, involved three vehicles which were involved in a collision with two horses on the B3277 St Agnes to Chiverton Cross road.

One of the horses died at the scene, the other was seriously injured and had to be put down by a vet as a result of the collision which is near to the Seven Mile Stone Garage.

A father and daughter from Redruth were in the silver Peugeot which appeared to have collided directly with the horses.

The female passenger has life threatening injuries and her father, who was driving, has serious injuries.

It took crews 15 minutes to get the “time-critical” injured passenger out of the car and a further 10 minutes to get the driver out.

Both were taken to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro by ambulance and the female has since been transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

The female driver of a Matiz, from St Agnes, was treated for shock and the male driver of a black Ford Fiesta, from Newquay, was uninjured.

Initial incident manager from Truro Community Fire Station, Mark Glanville, said the Peugeot had obviously hit one of the horses head-on.

“The bonnet was crushed and it appeared the horse had come up and hit the windscreen which was lying in the laps of the male driver and the female passenger.

“The roof was flat at the front and had concertinaed right back to the back seats.”

It is understood that two accident and emergency nurses on their way to work helped out at the scene before emergency services arrived.

The B3277 remains closed at Silverwell Junction and motorists are asked to avoid the area if at all possible.

“WhiteKnight your comments are hurtful and uninformed. How dare you make such comments that could be seen by family members and loved ones, all of who were worried about one of the nicest girls that you would ever wish to meet. She was fighting for her life when you left your spiteful comments and why do you need more information?? Surely those involved are the ones that need to be informed at this stage that the wider general public. rigelow...I could not agree more. I am quite shocked that some people appear to ambulance chase in relation to tragic accidents as I note comments on other reports from the same people...why feel the need to express your opinion when people are so tragically lost, hurt and upset when you know nothing of the details???? I looked at the accident reports due to being a close friend of one and knowing the other via family. This is usually the reason people want to comment due to it being a friend, loved one or family member and to express pain. I dont understand why some of you are trying to be Miss Marple and disregarding feelings in the process. It makes me sick......those that are making general comments about hoping Leanne gets better and the like are not targeted by my rant! You know who you are”

“Iwould like to add that the cause of the accident is a matter best left to the police and that all our thoughts should be with the young lady who is currently fighting for her life at Derriford Hospital.”

“KimMiddleton I was most surprised to see your post on a site which is primarily for people to express their opinions about the news. As I am sure you know there is a separate thread concerning the police appeal for information. Any information provided following that article will be scrutinised under expert accident investigation practice and police rules of evidence. Anything from these pages is likely to be just heresay. I fear your effort to research the story on here has struck the wrong chord, as has the rather light use of language e.g. "it would be great if you could get in touch" in such a serious situation.”

“What a sad and tragic accident. The owners of the horses must be devestated that firstly their horses managed to get loose and cause such a terrible crash and secondly the awful way their horses died. My heart goes out to those that were hurt and i hope and pray the young lady pulls through. very very sad for all concerned.”

“..... although their priority should be to contact the police and let THEM know what happened.”
