A jury took less than an hour to acquit a mother of charges alleging she had attempted to murder her former partner and her best friend by driving at them dangerously when in a jealous rage after seeing them walking hand in hand.

Karen Orchard, 40, was also found not guilty of two charges of intentionally attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm on Geoffrey (Joff) Richards, her 41-year-old former partner of almost eight years, and Roseanna Vanhorn, 35, and one charge of dangerous driving at Truro Crown Court today (Thursday).

She was convicted of a second charge of dangerous driving on Janaury 21 at The Lizard, which she had admitted in the witness box.

Mr Justice Burnett said: "I agree entirely with these verdicts, even if it is not my place to express a view."

He sentenced Orchard, a woman of previous good character with two daughters, of Parc an Ithan, The Lizard, to six months' imprisonment for the driving charge which, due to the period of time she had been on curfew awaiting trial, meant her immediate release.

The judge banned her from driving for 12 months and until she passes an extended driving test and ordered her to pay £250 towards the prosecution costs and a £15 victim's surcharge.

In respect of the one conviction of dangerous driving, the judge said he bore in mind the enormous stresses and strains she had been under stemming from being prosecuted for the second most serious offence in the legal calendar.
