“I am delighted to accept this role and deeply honoured to work nationally on improving rural and remote healthcare and services,” she said.
“Health needs and patterns of service are different in rural and remote areas.
“As a consequence, to ensure best care, accessible services and improve health outcomes it is vital that rural healthcare gains a higher profile in the thinking and action of the NHS, its partners and stakeholders.
“I aim to bring my experiences of both our successes and challenges in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to influence improvements in care.”
The newly established national post has been announced by Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director at NHS England.
It will provide clinical commissioning leadership and support a transformation in policy and practice to deliver improved health outcomes.
Mrs Boswell has held senior NHS roles both as a clinician and manager with a career interest in the health and well-being of rural populations; overcoming the challenges of accessing services; rural health and technology; and promoting collaborative action on the links between human health and the environment.
She added: “I will strike the right balance in prioritising the work of the trust and the responsibilities of the national clinical director role, putting the needs of the trust first.”
