Student spotlight

CORNWALL is well-known for its fantastic wealth of artistic talent and with thousands of students graduating next month, the Badcocks Gallery in Newlyn decided to see what has happened to four of last year's hopeful artists.

The gallery is showing the work of George Morgan, who in November 2008 won the Midas Award, Charlotte Williams who was also one of the seven finalists for the same award and Sally Dod who had a sell-out degree show.

The gallery has also included Remon Jephcott who completed the Contemporary Crafts Degree and specialised in ceramics.

It has been a year of highs and lows for these budding young artists and this is the culmination of months of hard work, but this is just the start of four very promising careers.

The gallery said: "We wanted to give these fledglings something tangible and exciting to aim for, during that very difficult transition period between the end of full-time education and taking the first tentative steps into the world of exhibiting in a commercial gallery.

"Their paintings are idiosyncratic, an individual eye of their world and above all the start of their artistic careers."

Badcocks has a history and a philosophy of giving exhibitions to artists recently graduated from institutions such as Falmouth. These have included Kristin Vestgard, Marie Claire Hamon and Marilyn Browning who from their initial shows at the gallery are now collected nationally and internationally.

One Year On runs until June 30. For more information see www.badcocksgallery.co.uk
