Town aiming to strike gold again

NEWQUAY is hoping to maintain its position as one of the best-maintained towns in the region when it is judged in next week's South West In Bloom contest.

Last year Newquay won gold in the competition, which is part of the RHS Britain in Bloom competition.

The event aims to encourage town communities to get the best out of their towns both environmentally and florally.

Mavis Warman, vice chairman of Newquay in Bloom, said the committee has been working with the town council, SERCO and the county council to highlight areas which need attention.

"We've been running neighbourhood awards to encourage people to look after their area. For example, the Cadets planted flowers in Crantock Street and the path has been improved."

"We've been entering the competition for years but in the last five or so years we've been more and more successful, and we won gold in 2008.

"We hope to repeat that performance this year."

The judges will be taken on a route around Newquay.

They will start from Crantock and end in Trenance Gardens. On the way they will visit Hendra, the Gannel Estuary, the town centre and St Columb Minor School.

"The committee are appealing to everyone to continue to present the town in the best possible way by clearing weeds, litter and graffiti," added Mavis.

"Here's hoping for gold in 2009."
