POURING rain did not stop passers by from having a go on cycles of all shapes and sizes at a special event in Truro.

Lemon Quay was the setting for the free cycle skills workshops as part of the Cornwall Festival of Cycling.

A cycling clown and penny farthing rider in Victorian dress were highlights of the rather wet afternoon, as was a cycle-powered smoothie drink maker.

Visitors also got the chance to have a go in a fenced-off arena on two, three and four-wheeled cycles, with professional instructors on hand to dole out tips and pointers. These also touched on tuition and advice about bike-handling and choosing the correct cycle.

Those stopping by also got the chance to win vouchers for local shop Clive Mitchell Cycles in a free prize draw.

Mark Sandamas, event coordinator for Pennine Events Ltd, which has been organising this year's festival in partnership with Bikeright!, said: “We were busy all day at the Truro Roadshow with children trying out the cycle skills course and people of all ages making cycle-smoothies, as well as having a look at the other displays.

“Nobody seemed to mind the awful weather and everyone had a good day.

“We'd love to see more people riding bikes as a result of our roadshows.”

The festival was organised by Cornwall County Council, which brought in the outside experts.

The festival also focused on cycle training in schools to national standards which will hopefully see them riding to class.
