£366m alcohol crime bill
ALCOHOL-fuelled crime and disorder costs Devon and Cornwall £366 million a year, a new report has revealed. The sum, published in the Peninsula Strategic Assessment, was put together by police and other agencies that deal with alcohol issues. Tony Hogg, Police and Crime Commissioner for the region, said there was a need for cultural change. He said: "Pre-loading – or the act of getting tanked up on cheap, shop-bought booze before going out – reduces the cost of a night out but the resultant cost to society is huge. "This cannot just be a matter for the police. They cannot deal with this issue on their own. We have to find a way to marry best practice with financial commitment across public, private and voluntary sectors."
