THE WORLD Pasty Championships will return to the Eden Project next March with even more on the menu.

Such was the success of the first championships last March that organisers are planning new classes and a grand 'Oggy Oscars' party.

Over the coming weeks, Eden will announce full entry categories for next year.

More than 100 competitors took part in March in the challenge, backed by the Cornish Pasty Association.

Amateur and professional bakers baked traditional Cornish pasties and variations on the classic recipe.

Next year the championships will pit small, medium and large companies against each other, with a new contest for bakeries under their own names. A children's class is also on the cards.

Tony Trenerry, senior sous chef at the Eden Project, said: "Thousands of people flocked in for the day and since then we have listened to feedback to try to make next year's event better and bigger still.

"As well as introducing a new class for companies to compete and a children's class, we are going to throw an Oggy Oscars party after the trophies have been handed out to round off what we are confident will be another brilliant celebration of the pasty."

Mark Muncey, chairman of the Cornish Pasty Association, said: "The first championships worked very well last year. This is a properly run and well-judged competition we are happy to support. It's also a lot of fun.

"We suggested the new class so that companies can compete and we will encourage our members to enter. Who wouldn't want to be World Pasty Champion?"

“No pasty is better than mothers...I think that's the test of how Cornish you are!”

“A very subjective topic. Home-made for me every time. Just lazy and expensive to buy these commercial replicas of a simple classic”
