Another record year for Duchy athletes
CORNISH athletes have celebrated another successful year in 2013, setting 22 new county records and equalling one previous record.
This was just one fewer than the record year in 2012, showing that the sport remains in a healthy position at the top end of competition. This year the records included 19 individual performances and an unprecedented four relay records.
The 2013 records are dominated by the girls, with 15 coming from the female age groups and eight from the male categories. Four girls stole the limelight, setting or equalling nine of the records between them, with Lamorna Newman (Cornwall AC) leading the way. The Helston athlete began the season well, equalling the Under 20 100m record (12.2), following this with a record breaking Triple Jump (11m 49) in July, before adding the 200 metres to her summer collection, clocking 25.09 in August. In the same age group, Jordanna Morrish (Cornwall AC) improved the county High Jump record to 1m 79, which ranked her 5th in the UK.
The Under 15 Girls section boasts two Cornwall AC youngsters who both ranked 2nd in the UK for their respective events. Rebecca Gray ranked number two in the Pole Vault, setting a new county mark of 3m 30 and Georgia Doyle-Lay not only improved the county Pentathlon record, scoring 3092 points, but became one of the season's four double record breakers, leaping 10m 51 in the Triple Jump. Georgia's pentathlon result earned her an England international vest and only last week she represented her country in the British Schools multi event match in Glasgow.

One of Cornwall's top track performances came in the Veteran Ladies' 5000 metres with Emma Stepto's new county Veteran's record of 16.13.0 taking her to number one spot on the UK's All Time List for the Veteran's 40-44 age group, beating the previous best time set 27 years ago.
