It's time for tea – and a new world record
Volunteers and staff from a Westcountry charity have smashed the world record for tea party attendance.
Devon-based Hospiscare staged the event in the Great Hall of the University of Exeter, hosting 403 guests for cream tea and beating the old Guinness World Record of 334.
The tea party was the idea of Paula Lawford and Jessica Macan from the Exeter Friends of Hospiscare. Mrs Lawford said: "The volunteers and staff at Hospiscare work so hard, so it is nice to be able to say thank you.
"It is such a lovely occasion because they have been able to bring their families and friends along too. So often on events we are limited by space and finance, so we are incredibly grateful to the university, who provided a team of helpers, the hall and the food for the record attempt."
At exactly 4pm everyone began pouring cups of tea and eating their scones, jam and cream, while the entire process was recorded and independently witnessed in order to send all the documentation to Guinness for confirmation.
Hospiscare, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, cares for 650 patients at any one time across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.
