Ten sites in St Ives and Carbis Bay to be shortlisted for £12 million care home development
CARE home provider Cornwall Care has revealed it will shortlist ten potential sites around St Ives for a new £12 million nursing home and elderly housing complex in January.
The company wants to replace its two outdated care homes - Trewartha in Carbis Bay and Headlands in St Ives - and insists there is a desperate need for provision in the area.
Care UK want to create a purpose-built modern 72 bed home and 26 accompanying apartments for older people who want to live independently but with support services.
The charity, the largest independent care provider in Cornwall, made a public appeal for suitable sites after its original planning application for the Steeple Fields site was turned down in April last year.

Cornwall Care formed a working group that includes Mayor of St Ives Councillor Ron Tulley, Deputy Mayor Councillor Colin Nicholls and head of the environment committee Councillor Tim Andrewes, plus a Cornwall Council planning officer, who have all advised in the shortlisting process.
The next stage will be a public consultation with the local community, said the charity.
Cornwall Care chief executive Douglas Webb said: "We are delighted with the response to our appeal for potential sites in St Ives.
"The working group set out criteria for the right location including plot size, distance from town, proximity to a bus route, the purchase price and the prospect of the land being available for this development.
Mr Webb said: "We have had valuable advice from planning officer Peter Bainbridge, which will help the working group assess the proposed sites within the parameters of what would be acceptable in planning terms."
The working group will meet to shortlist the ten possible sites against the criteria in January and then launch a public consultation.
Mr Webb said: "We are committed to this project because we want to provide good quality care and support services for older people in this area which are being held back by the outdated existing accommodation.
"At the heart of our ethos, as a non-profit making organisation, is our wish to work with the local community for the benefit of the local community and I am sure by working together we can get first class facilities for older people in the St Ives area."

“a '72' bed home is NOT MODERN !!! its an outdated mode of care!
Read the news cornwall care, warehousing for people with learning disabilities is banned from 2012. The next group of vulnerable people who are ill-looked after in warehouses is the elderly.
The british public will soon start to become more aware of all the abuse that goes on elderly settings. I'd be careful of spending all that money as sooner rather than later... you're going to have to shut it as times have changed!!”
