Banned Marshall to miss crunch match

HAYLE boss Gary Marks will be just one player short of a full strength squad for Saturday's visit to St Austell (2.15pm).

Midfielder Guy Marshall starts a two-match suspension and, as well as missing the game at St Austell, he will also be unavailable for next Saturday's Cornwall Senior Cup tie against Penzance.

"It's a nasty blow for us and for him, but we've just got to get on with it," said Marks, who is determined to put right his side's shock 5-1 home defeat by the Lilywhites in the Charity Cup a fortnight ago.

"We had a good talk about that – we never came out of the dressing room for some reason and they were three up inside 12 minutes.

"So we have plenty of motivation to put that right and the players have added motivation in that there is competition for places within the squad we've now got.

"St Austell are flying at the moment and are scoring goals quite readily. They normally play a 3-5-2 formation, so our task will be to counteract their extra man in midfield."

The Lilywhites are currently third in the table on goal difference just above Hayle, who have a game in hand. "That certainly makes Saturday a six-pointer," added Marks.

● New Mousehole boss Darren Woodard also has a near full strength squad ahead of this Saturday's home game against Truro City (2.15).

The 38-year-old former Seagulls player, whose managerial debut was delayed last week when high winds caused the postponement of the scheduled home fixture against local rivals Hayle, is looking forward to his first game in charge after taking over from caretaker boss Mark Trevail.

And he has been boosted by the return of key defender Toby Cape, who has been sidelined for the last three months with a broken toe.

"It's a big boost to have Toby back as he is such an important players for us, though he will be starting on the bench," Woodard said.

"The only first team regular missing will be Barrie Prowse, who is unavailable this weekend."

Woodard is well aware of the potential threat that a young City side could pose. "They're a good passing side and any team who can beat Newquay 6-2, as they have done, has to be respected.

"But I believe they can be bullied a bit and that is what we've got to do. We'll be pressing them hard and trying to get in their faces. We've got to play a bit ugly and learn to scrap more, otherwise we'll be in trouble if we let them play.

"But I see this as a winnable game and I'll be disappointed if we don't get something out of it."

In the SWPL premier division, in-form Penzance travel to bottom of the table Clyst Rovers on Saturday (3pm).

The Magpies had to come back from 2-0 down to record their fourth successive home win when they beat struggling Holsworthy 4-2 at Penlee Park last weekend, but will travel to Waterslade Park seeking a first away victory in the league since a 2-1 win at Bovey Tracey in September.

Trevor Mewton's men welcome back Jonny Ludlam after a one-match suspension, while Gregg Butcher faces a late fitness test, but winger James Miller should be fit to start.
