CLINTON BACK TO FORM:

Mining Snooker League Division One leaders Clinton SC A came back to form with a bang after suffering their first defeat in the previous game, winning 5-0 against Playing Place. There were some good breaks for the leaders, with Gary Bray equalling the previous highest with a 62, Steve Downing making a 61 and Scott Bray with two breaks of 57 and 39. Clinton A now lead by five points from their own B team and Redruth British Rail in joint second place. Clinton SC B (Darren Murrish 31 clearance) won 3-2 at the Godolphin Club while the Railmen went one better with a 4-1 result against Lanner. Fourth-placed St Day lost 3-2 at Breage despite winning the first two frames through John Dunn and Carl Boundy. Breage hit back with wins from Nathan Strick, Roy Good and Peter Williams, the last two being black ball deciders. Illogan HI B scored their second successive victory when beating their own highly-rated A team 3-2, with wins from Darren Jenkin, Keith Philp and Richard May. Redruth RBL won 3-2 at Four Lanes, helped by a break of 39 from young Jake Stewart in a superb potting display and a 35 from Anthony Curnow. There was a 54 break from Bell's Court professional Andy Hicks, making a rare appearance this season in a 3-2 victory over Penponds. Lanner now occupy bottom place in the division, but are just one point adrift of Four Lanes and Illogan HI B. In the clash of last week's two top teams in Division Two, Feock beat Porthleven 4-1, and, in their first season in the higher division, proudly head the table above Playing Place and Redruth RBL. Wayne Tucker was the only winner for Porthleven, with Ben Trewern gaining a good win over Porthleven's Dean Williams. Playing Place gained their third 4-1 victory of the campaign at the expense of Bell's Court, while Redruth RBL beat Park Bottom 3-2, with another win from 10 year old Carl Mitchell. St Day finally came good with a 5-0 win at Redruth British Rail, who are languishing at the bottom with only one win in their first match this season. There are only five points between Feock at the top and Perranporth Golf Club in ninth. With Camborne Conservative having to postpone their match due to a flu epidemic, Redruth Club have taken over at the top of Division Three. Last week they won 5-0 at Bell's Court, while nearest rivals Radnor Golf A won 3-2 at Clinton SC. Third-placed Perranporth Golf Club lost their first match of the season, going down 3-2 at home to Penponds, despite a good win by Dave Mugford over Penponds' Kevin Gill. There was a 30 break by Andrew Roskrow for Park Bottom, but his team lost 3-2 at home to Redruth RBL. Redruth British Rail came out of a bad spell of three successive defeats by winning 5-0 at Radnor Golf B.

Cornwall take on Devon on Sunday November 23 with matches at the Redruth Club (billiards), Redruth RBL (youth snooker) and Clinton SC (senior snooker). Matches start at 12.30pm with Redruth Club opening its doors at noon (bar available).

Five-a-side Football

TOP TEAMS RACE AHEAD:

In the Taylor's Tyres Carn Brea five-a-side league this week the top two teams have opened up a sizeable gap from the rest of the field with unbeaten leaders MJ Maintainance defeating Duchy Hospital twice 4-1 and 6-1 and then they defeated a strong Fryer team. And this was despite having been down to four players due to two team members being blue carded. Second-placed Camborne Cricket Club defeated RRH Portreath twice 8-1 and 3-2, but had to come from behind in the second game after trailing 2-0. In their third match of the night they defeated Redruth Utd reserves 7-3. This result completed a bad night for the Reds' reserves, having lost twice to Fryer 10-1 and 7-0. In the Thursday league the last unbeaten record went, with Penmarth defeating Redruth School Staff 6-1 and 9-2, in the other fixture Big Andy Byles' Gladiators made it 10 straight defeats out of 10 for the Fone All Stars team by winning 4-2 in both games.

DERBY DRAW:

Redruth Albany 10, St Day 10

Albany failed to turn possession into points in this Cornwall Two league encounter played in terrible conditions on Saturday. St Day opened the scoring through a Jon Rule penalty, Albany replied with a try scored by centre Martyn Lawrance which was created by some strong running and fantastic handling by Scott Murray. Albany continued to dominate but conceded a penalty try which was kicked by Jon Rule. The second half brought a further try scored by Justin Johns for the Blues again supplied by Murray, Barber narrowly missed the difficult conversion. Albany suffered a big blow, losing captain and No 8 Justin Lawrance with a ankle injury and had to shuffle the pack but were unable to breach the St Day defence.

Camborne Res 10, Ivybridge Res 0

Camborne made it a hard-fought double on the day with victory against the Ivybridge's second string at Crane Park. Scrum half Dean Pascoe and full back Matt Taylor scored the unconverted tries for the Cherry & Whites.

St Just 0, Camborne 3rds 22

Camborne bounced back to top form with a comfortable win at Tregeseal Valley. Veteran No 8 Lee Hooper bagged a brace of tries with centre Mark Bauer adding another. Full back Stuart Woods converted two of the scores and also landed a penalty.

MIXED BAG OF RESULTS:

It was a very busy weekend for Redruth Colts with games for the U19s at Torquay U18s in a Cornwall Cup qualifying at home to Wadebridge and on Sunday the U17s were at home to Penryn. The results were a bit of a mixed bag with a good performance and result at Torquay where the Reds dominated the first half with some excellent flowing rugby with four tries, two for Tom Job playing in the centre for the Colts for the first time. A great team try by prop Adam Strick finished a flowing move involving backs and forwards. Phil Hinchley added the fourth try in the second half. To give Torquay credit they never gave up and during the second half came very close to giving the Reds a shock as the momentum went out of their game with tries by Aaron Graham (2) and Luke Cairns, but the Reds held on to win 22-19. At Redruth the U18s were making very hard work for themselves in qualifying for the cup, with this unexpected loss to a strong determined Wadebridge side. Leading entering stoppage time, by 8-3, Wadebridge managed to score with the last move of the game and add the extras to give them a great away victory over the holders. On a very wet and windy Sunday afternoon the U17s managed to put themselves in a comfortable position in the Cornwall Merit Table for qualifying for the National Cup with a comprehensive victory over Penryn. Redruth's try-scorers were Dean Bonds (3), John Jackson, Aaron Penberthy and Ben Drew all chipping in with a score each. Penberthy added a conversion and Graig Williams kicked two conversions and a penalty.

NATIONAL COLTS CUP:

This weekend Redruth are playing at home on Sunday in the National Colts Cup against Bridgwater Albion Colts with a 2.30pm kick off. Victory here would see the Reds advance out of the South West Division into the last 32 for the sixth season a row. On Saturday the U18s continue with the Cornwall Cup rounds against Newquay, a venue and kick off is still to be decided for this match which has now become a must win for the Reds after some disappointing results in these early rounds.

REDRUTH SECURE CUP PLACE:

Falmouth Albion 3, Redruth Utd 5

Despite missing their captain Phil Nicholls, Simon Barrand stepped up to the plate as an able deputy. Redruth secured their place in the last 16 of the Western Division of the Junior Cup with a good win against their favoured opponents – albeit the game was overshadowed by the dismissal of a Falmouth Albion player late in the first half, which changed the complexion of the game. Albion took the lead within the first three minutes from a set-piece. However, Redruth hit back just two minutes later through Guy Johnson who scored the first of his three goals for the Reds. Albion then moved into a 3-1 lead, prior to being reduced to 10 men as they headed towards the break. Redruth quickly got back into the game with a second Johnson goal, and equalised on 60 minutes as James Petty followed through on a low-driven cross from the right by McCabe. Johnson soon notched his hat-trick to give Redruth the edge, and Tony Barber completed the scoring for the Reds with 10 minutes remaining.

Threemilestone 6, Spice of Life 0

With gale force winds and rain and no official referee this was a Mining League Division One game that perhaps Spice should not have started. Spice held Threemilestone in the rain free first half, going to the interval just 1-0 down. Spice winger Dale Adams had four chances to score, Ian Stephens also had chances, with all of them ending in tame efforts. With the Adams brothers, Nicky and Brett, not starting, through injury and work commitments, and three forced substitutes, Spice collapsed in the second half to an in-form Threemilestone side.

Storm FC 0, Illogan 2

After a top of the table Mining League Division One clash, Storm lost their unbeaten league record to a spirited Illogan side. Illogan adjusted quickly to the wet and windy conditions and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half. Poor marking from a corner led to a free header and Illogan's second goal just before the interval. The second half was evenly contested with no further goals scored. However, Storm will feel very disappointed with their below par performance.

Redruth Utd Res 0, Storm Res 2

Both teams started brightly in this Mining League Division Three game, but following a series of long shots on goal, a wet and windy first half ended 0-0. As conditions deteriorated in the second half, the reserves were unable to ride out the 'storm' and two goals from livewire Lee Jewell finished off the home side. The reserves' long ball game was no match for the slicker passing displayed by the visitors and they deserved their win. The scoreline could have been much more embarrassing, were it not for goalkeeper Brian Keitch, who claimed man of the match.

Carharrack 4, Rosudgeon 1

Carharrack AFC took maximum points from this Falmouth-Helston League Division Two game against a determined Rosudgeon side. The football was not attractive but in tough conditions the home side were happy to take the win. Carharrack's new signing Kevin Endean started off events by cutting inside to take the lead on the eighth minute. Both teams then battled end to end until the interval. After the break, Carharrack winger Stu Luggs was held back inside the box resulting in a penalty, which leading striker Liam Bray gratefully converted. Keen to finish the game off, Endean scored once more by shifting past the Rosudgeon defence. The visitors claimed one back but it came too late as Bray struck home the fourth to take victory.

Golf

RADNOR RESULTS:

The November medal was a well supported event with 67 players braving a rare, biting northerly wind. It proved to be the undoing of many a seasoned golfer with only a third of the field breaking 80. Pick of the day was Ian Curnow with a 65-16-49, taking the Division One title from Steve Hunter 71-20-51. Debutant Wayne Coyne 76-26-50 took Division Two honours from David Phillips 73-21-52.

Other results. Remembrance Day Stableford: 1 Jon Tarbox 40, 2 Don Pinder, 3 Doug Bishop.

Blind partners 4bbb: Walter Gibson & Doug Bishop 49pts.

Radnor Golf Society: 1 Ian Gorton 36pts; 2 Perry St Quintin 35pts; 3 Harry Evans.

REDRUTH SUMMER LEAGUE:

Dennis Finch captained his Redruth British Railway Club Robbers to win the Redruth Summer Pool League. The delighted skipper has encountered many runner's up positions in past seasons of both winter and summer leagues, but finally his team have claimed their first title. He said: "It has took us a long time but I had faith in the squad which have stayed together now for about seven years, we will now go for the double and try and win the winter league. That is the one we want."

The Robbers title winning squad: Dennis Finch (captain), Phil Falcolner, Mike Falcolner, Daniel Kazmarek, Paul Blackham, Malcolm Bickham, Steve Holman, Joe Tonkin and Neil Barrett.

The runners up position will be decided by a play-off between Oxford Inn Sharks and Trevenson SC.

CAMBORNE-REDRUTH & DISTRICT WINTER LEAGUE:

The league is in its 29th year, a fantastic achievement from all the committee members, teams and all players who have supported the league, which has started with a league of 14 teams. This season will be a long competitive one. On December 10 at the Redruth British Railway Club the league will be holding the Donald Congdon Memorial Singles Knockout which will be open to all league registered players over one frame knockout. Week two saw the youthful St Day Inn team have a terrific 8-1 away victory over Threemilestone SC, Alan Williams, Nathen Mitchell, Mark Smith, Mark Bickham and the potting machine Simon Jones all won the singles for the Saints. Threemilestone's only victor was Ade Arthur who beat Matt Cook. The shock result saw Miners Arms win 5-4 away to Redruth British Railway Robbers. Gary Pearce, the Miners' captain, beat fellow captain Dennis Finch. Ex-Railway player James Chapman won a thrilling game against Paul Blackham to put Miners 3-2 up then veteran Les Ellis notched up another for the Miners by beating Neil Brum Barrett. Robbers bounced back by making the scores level at 4-4 by taking the first two doubles but the decider was won by the Miners partnership of James Chapman & Les Ellis who beat Paul Blackham & Steve Holman.

Other Results: Redruth British Railway Virgins 6; Countryman A 3; Trevenson SC 5; Redruth British Railway Puffers 4; Oxford Inn Nomads 2; Oxford Inn Sharks 7.
