Cornish Marathon reaches 25th anniversary

Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 17:41

Next Sunday, November 16, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Cornish Marathon.

The race, which has been sponsored by the UK's leading pasty baker, Ginsters, for the past three years, follows a tough course starting and finishing in Pensilva and organisers expect to see more than 200 runners this year.

Hillary Clatworthy, race director for the East Cornwall Harriers, said: "The 26.22 mile Cornish Marathon course has a reputation for being one of the toughest marathons the UK has to offer and people come from all over the world to compete – including the US, Ireland, Korea, South Africa and Germany.

"Starting at 10am, competitors will have to deal with some tricky valleys and steep climbs throughout the course, but that's what makes the Cornish Marathon so memorable and a true representation of Cornwall.

"We're privileged to once again have sponsorship from another piece of Cornish heritage – Ginsters of Cornwall.

"Not only do they provide much needed sustenance at the end of the race, their support also helps us to keep this Cornish tradition alive with the spirit in which it was started 25 years ago."

Mark Duddridge, managing director of Ginsters, comments: "It gives us great pleasure to be able to sponsor the Cornish Marathon for the third year and contribute to a piece of Cornish history.

"This event brings the community together year after year and really helps put Cornwall on the map.

"Our quality ingredients come from right here on Cornish soil and we are proud to be able to give the competitors a real taste of something Cornish as they complete their marathon challenge."

One particular landmark to look out for during this year's race is Alan Littlejohn of Launceston Road Runners, who has run the race 20 times.
