CRICKET: Robert 'Bobbie' Cook, Hayle's all-round cricketer, received congratulations from colleagues at the club's AGM on receiving the special cup awarded by Cornwall County Cricket Club, for the most improved young county cricketer of the year.
It was also stated although the club finished bottom of the league, there were remarkable achievements and with a little more luck they might have finished higher up the league.
Top of the averages were batting: R Harris 18 inns, 512 runs, 32 ave; C Polglase 8 inns, 145 runs, 24 ave; C Jenkin 14 inns, 492 runs, 16 ave. Bowling: R Cook 248 overs, 619 runs, 47 wkts, 13 ave; O Gregor 252 overs, 687 runs, 45 wkts, 15 ave; C Jenkin 143 overs, 492 runs, 19 wkts, 25 ave.
● Football: Penzance's dream of reaching the opening round of the F A Amateur Cup for the first time in their history was well and truly shattered in their 3-2 defeat by Clevedon.
The side performed poorly against a side that have reached the first round in the past 12 seasons. For Penzance the stars were Phillips, Thomas, Wadd and winger Hill.
● Sailing: Uffa Fox, the outstanding yachtsman, was the guest of the Marazion Sailing Club at their annual dinner.
● Boxing: Royston Broad (mentioned in last week's column) of St Ives became the first Cornish boy to gain the Air Training Corps national title at flyweight.

CRICKET: Trophy winners from Hayle Cricket Club were: Leslie Gall (cup for most matches); Neil Cook and Clive Polkinghorne (joint winners of the clubman of the year trophy).
● Shooting: Cornwall's riflemen are hunting for a new open-air range to replace that at Start, near Hayle, which is to be swallowed by the proposed Hayle bypass.
● Table Tennis: Cornwall table tennis selectors have selected four out of five members of the county team from St Ives. They are: John Leith, John Bassett, Sharon James and Shirley Collins.
● Football: Marazion defeated Falmouth Docks 5-1. Scorers for the Blues were: Phil Jenkins, Colin Pryor, Chris Morlaine and Kevin Groves.
St Just defeated St Agnes 2-1, scorer was John Pinkett. Mousehole drew with Pendeen 2-2. Mousehole scorers: Steve Curnow and George Jeffery. Pendeen's goals came from Jamie Sweeney and Jonathan Verran.
Mark Smith, who plays for Penzance and Camborne Lions, is included in the Cornwall Youth squad to play Devon.
Richmond Rangers top the Nicholas Cup table followed by Gulval, Porthleven, Marazion, Ludgvan and Rosudgeon. In the other table St Buryan are top, followed by Pendeen, Sennen, Mousehole and St Just.

CRICKET: A bright cricketing career is beckoning for 15-year-old wicket keeper Tim Edwards, of Goldsithney, who has been selected for the West of England U16 side to tour Trinidad and Tobago. He also plays football for Marazion in the Jolly's Cornwall Combination League.
● Rugby: Cornwall's selectors have chosen the team that defeated Gloucestershire to win the South Toshiba Group title to face the USSR at Redruth. Adam Ellery of Richmond and the Pirates is named among the replacements. In the team to face the Royal Navy, local players selected are: Billy Peters, Jason Atkinson (St Ives) and Nicky Roach, while from the Pirates are Ellery and Neil Wearne.
● Football: Mousehole Reserves were pictured in The Cornishmanbefore their 3-0 home defeat against Madron. The team comprised: Joe Jeffery, Anthony Harvey, Adrian Evans, Mark Wilson, Jeff Richardson, Peter Nicholls, Tim Richardson, Steven Semmens, Graham Cook, Tommy Kinver, Neil Jackson, Tristan Prowse, Micky Bacon, Neil Harris, John Gibbard. The team was managed by Tony Sowden and Paul Sexton.
● Biathlon: Jonathan Kind, of Penzance, raced his first biathlon, a race combining running and cycling. In a race in Surrey, he came 45th out of a field of 429 competitors.
● Referees: The annual quiz, based on the laws of football, was won for the fourth consecutive year by the team from West Penwith. The team comprised: Peter George, Sid Thomas, Geoff Preece and Andrew Loutit.

CRICKET: Three long serving servants of Penzance Cricket Club stood down at the AGM. Brian Harvey, Brian Richards and Brian Laity, respectively as president, secretary and chairman. Godfrey Adams was elected as the new chairman, Jeremy Kneebone as secretary and John Beckerleg the new president. Tim Lord, last season's skipper, stood down and was replaced by Treve Laity, for this third spell in charge. The meeting heard that the first team was relegated from Division One but that the second team had gained promotion for the second successive year.
● Running: Ronnie James had a weekend trip to Spain and it proved worthwhile, as he came second in the Benidorm Marathon, completing the race in two hours 28 minutes.
● Pool: Dominic Clemens reached the last eight of the U18s National Junior Singles 8-ball competition at Chatham, Kent. The event attracted 92 competitors from around the country. The result has earned Dominic a place at the England Trials.
● Football: The Magpies were dealt a sickening last minute blow at St Austell's Poltair Park, as Paul Mildon's last gasp winner sent them crashing out of the Senior Cup by two goals to one. The Magpies had beaten them 7-0 earlier in the season, but with several players unavailable and the Vercesi brothers, James and Mark, recently leaving to sign for Bodmin, this was always going to be a tough fixture. Goalscorer was Colin Payne.
