Cornishmen beaten in national semi-finals

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 08:58

WHEN Cornwall's men stepped onto the green to play relative minnows Isle of Wight in the national semi-final of the National County Top Two Fours competition, at Worthing, they must have felt confident of a good win, writes Grenville Phillips.

However, they kept their supporters on the edge of their seats, as although Cornwall ran out winners by 10 shots, they never had a comfortable ride, with one rink winning and one losing.

In the afternoon's final against a strong Derbyshire side, Cornwall, with the majority of their players not showing the form of which they are capable, suffered an early blitz, falling 19 shots behind after five ends.

They managed to claw this back to 10 at 15 ends. But as it transpired, this early setback led to their demise. With Mark Foster's rink winning by two and Mark Read's rink scoring over the last four ends, however, to finally lose by six, Cornwall managed to make the score more respectable, losing overall by only four.

Scores: (Cornwall skips first): Semi-final: M Foster 18 M Griffith 19, M Read 23 D Griffith 12. Cornwall 41, Isle of Wight 31. Final: M Foster 15 S Skelton 13, M Read 21 P Broughton 27. Cornwall 36 Derbyshire 40. Cornwall team: D Roe (Stenalees), G Frost (Trenance), T Phillips and M Foster (Carnon Downs): D Drew, A Hawke and I Drew (St Austell) and M Read (Stenalees).
