Dedicated Denis receives coveted honorary award

09:52 - 01-July-2008

SCORRIER and Chacewater Show proved the perfect platform for BSJA regional representative Julian Trim from Dorset to perform the official presentation of Honorary Life Membership of the BSJA to Denis Harvey of East Penventon Farm, Four Lanes.

This is a coveted award and there is no person more deserving than Denis to receive this honour.

Denis has served the BSJA as a judge for more than 30 years and in 1998 he became Cornwall's deputy area representative, a position he held until his recent retirement.

Pam Warren, the BSJA area representative for Cornwall, said: “Denis' contribution to the area has been enormous in many ways.

“For many years in his capacity as a vet he officiated at the large number of all-day shows held here in Cornwall. He's served as a member of the Scorrier committee for over 50-years alongside his wife Margaret who has been secretary of the show for 40 years.

“When Scorrier and Chacewater amalgamated in 1990 Margaret and Denis continued with their work. Denis has been a true ambassador for showjumping and it's a fitting tribute that this presentation has taken place back at this show where it all began.”

This show played host to the Equissage Discovery semi-final where the sole ticket on offer to the Scope Festival BSJA final was secured by Laura Jane Dale from Brixham, Plymouth, on her seven-year-old mare Ulieta.

Recommended by international rider Shane Breen, Irish course builder Tom Holden flew in from Dublin especially for this qualifier and his inviting tracks received wide acclaim from the riders.

A small but highly competitive entry set out over Mr Holden's first round course where the majority stayed clear to secure a place over the shortened raised track where the field was reduced to a final eight.

“The cream rose to the top and we were left with some decent horses in the jump off,” said Cornwall's area representative Pam Warren.

“Tom was as sharp as a tack and didn't miss a thing all day. He commented on how many competitors didn't think enough about riding correct distances and how they should concentrate on riding with more flow.”

With just one ticket up for grabs the pressure fell on the early drawn riders to set a strong target and in doing so clear rounds proved hard to come by in their chase against the clock.

Maria Hewlett from Bristol bagged second place on Wapley's Tiny Surprise while Mary Grose from Ivybridge took third on Utah XI from Sammie Jo Coffin (St Austell), Claire Rushworth (Wadebridge), Sophie Stockdale (Cardinham) and Clare Beacham (Helston).

● It was a sweet victory for six-year-old Abi Dymond who scooped the Kitchens First Supreme championship on her five-year-old pony Cosford Bitter Aloe at the BSPS Area 13a Show held at Chyverton Park.

Behind the scenes it has taken months of patient care and dedication by Abi's mother Fiona to produce this stunning black gelding for the show ring. “When 'Burt' (Cosford Bitter Aloe) arrived at our yard he was a little bit wild and very nervous,” explained Fiona from Blisland who jointly owns this son of Stanley Grange Cocktail with her mother Shirley.

Tony Geake from St Austell who judged the Supreme championship was clearly impressed with this up and coming combination.

“My champion has beautiful conformation,” he said.

“He's a lovely pony who has performed very well in very difficult weather.”

Mr Geake presented the Supreme championship award on behalf of Andy Taylor of Kitchens Direct, Helston.

Abi began the show in style with a win in the BSPS show pony leading rein class en route to the mini championship which saw Pollyanna Yule and Rockscreen Scarlet Pimpernel in reserve.

She continued her successful run in the show hunter pony section claiming the championship on her four-year-old riding Gryngalt Picture Puzzle from Pollyanna's sister Imogene Yule and Little Briars Told You So.

Lucy Bowden from Redruth lifted the hunter pony championship with a polished performance riding Jenny Williamson's Tarantella while the reserve supreme and show pony championship went to Graham Laity's Cottrell Special Edition ridden by Tish Pickles of Crantock.

Lucinda Waters from Newquay came away with a trio of honours adding the best rider award to the reserve championship in the show pony section and a win in the part-bred Arab class on her mother Kath's chestnut gelding Bowlandforest Dandelion.

Kathryn Pitt from Redruth produced a foot-perfect show on her mother Jenny's Centre Stage to emerge with the intermediate championship, while the reserve went to Rhys Harper from Scorrier on his new ride My True Blue.

A strong entry came forward for the mountain and moorland section where the mini championship went to Marie Laity from Truro with her own Rushiefault Gideon ridden by her son Oliver.

Lauren Picknet collected the reserve with Chetwynd Crackerjack, while Emma James from St Agnes emerged at the top of the novice line-up on her new ride Willoway Golden Jubilee.

Louise Hendy and Rhydspence Renown recorded a wining double in the Heritage working hunter pony classes while the champion working hunter pony title went to Kate Burley riding Carnkief Toyboy from Anna Richards and Time and Again.

Wynswood Jonquil proved her worth when her young riders, Izzy McClean and Alex Hurst stood champion and reserve on this lovely pony in the popular fun classes section.
