First tentative airing for works in progress
Two brand new works in progress from Plymouth-based artistic companies are being showcased at the city's Barbican Theatre next month as part of their Flourish programme, which aims to support and promote new work made in the South West.
The first production, on Friday, March 1, will be Static from New Model Theatre. It's a monologue that combines storytelling with verbatim news reports, telling a coming of age story that spans a decade. From the 9/11 World Trade Centre attacks, to the top of Tory HQ, to drunken nights out, Static is the story of a generation who had the world at their fingertips.
The following night sees the staging of Protest by Pilot's Thumb, a powerful docu-drama that addresses the topic of protest using multi-media, movement, narrative and theatrical collage, while being mindful of the personal dilemmas of those caught up in political and social forces.
Protest has been inspired by last year's events in Russia when the members of the band Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison for their "punk rock" protest against President Vladimir Putin at Moscow's Cathedral.

As part of their research Pilot's Thumb engaged with a wide range people including asylum seekers and a radical theologian, as well as undertaking research into historical events including the suffragette movement and the Peasants Revolt of the 14th century. The resulting work-in-progress leaves the audience with a question. What would it take for you to protest yourself?
Pilot's Thumb was founded in 2010, and the company features Beth Scott Hewlitt, who has appeared in ITV drama Doc Martin and on stage at the Barbican in The Man in the Red Scarf, Cassie Williamson who has appeared in Emmerdale, Doctors and Casualty, and Danny Strike who has acted for Wild Works, Burn The Curtain and The People's Company.
These two work-in-progress performances are free and open to any members of the public who want to support the making of new theatre in the region.
