A CROWD estimated at more than 200 people, thought to be one of the largest in years, watched the start of Cury Hunt's annual Boxing Day meet in Helston town centre on Monday.

About 40 riders and 30 hounds mingled with the crowd in Monument Road before the hunt set off along its route to Degibna and Gunwalloe.

Joint masters Adam Tiffin and Ian Williams, who has been riding with hounds for more than 40 years, were pleased with the turnout.

It came five years into the ban on hunting with hounds, which Mr Williams still hoped would eventually be repealed. The hunt now follows a scent trail.

He also pointed out that despite the legal restriction, the hunt and its pack had remained "intact, which is quite a feat".

Before they set off, the riders were offered drinks by the landlord and landlady of the Seven Stars pub, Neil Barku and Jodie Phillips.

Mr Williams thanked the spectators for their support, and the riders were then applauded as they left the town centre.

“200 turn out to watch the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable. Just a bunch of toffs revelling in their undeserved status.”
