Students get a lesson straight from the horse's mouth
EQUINE students from Duchy College Stoke Climsland visited the yard of an international event rider to learn about training methods.
The students, taking the Extended Diploma in Horse Management, toured Tamsyn Hutchins' yard and facilities near Looe and watched horses being schooled and jumped by her and her team.
Bradley Moore-Taylor, studying for a Foundation Degree in Equine Sports Performance at the college, also works for Miss Hutchins on her yard and spoke to the students about how he balances working for a professional rider with his studies.
He said working and studying was helping him realise his dream of working in the equine sports performance industry.
Miss Hutchins, from Looe, started riding on a Shetland pony at the age of 5.
Her first ambitions were in showjumping and she went to the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley several times.
She then discovered a passion for eventing and was part of the team which gained bronze at the Pony Europeans, on Harry Hot Shot, and the Junior Europeans on Tully Lane.
Course manager Simon Scott said: "The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to watch and ask questions about schooling, training and coaching aspects.
"It was fantastic that Bradley was able to talk to the students about higher education, and balancing this with his job at Tamsyn's yard.
"He was really positive about his experiences and gave an insight into what it's like to study for a degree at Duchy College. The students left feeling inspired at what they could achieve."
To pursue her passion, Miss Hutchins has spent many hours on the road, travelling to Germany, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Italy.
College principal Andrew Counsell said: "We're really pleased to be able to offer students visits like these.
"The students have gained a lot of knowledge from seeing how a working yard operates and I also want to thank Tamsyn for taking the time to talk to us."
