Padstow boy's Thai boxing challenge
Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 11:47
Liam Pender from the Higher Level Gym, Padstow, will participate in the Contender Asia Season 2 qualifier.
He will represent the South against the North of England in the junior event at Watford Coliseum, Hertfordshire, alongside twice British junior champion Isaac Ashley, 12, from Touchgloves, Penzance.
The main event is an eight-man contest in which a final winner competes against the world's best to be crowned the "contender".
Liam has come a long way in his short career.
He has been training for the past 18 months with his dad, Steve Pender, who runs the local Thai boxing gym.
Steve's aim when he started was to help local children get into a sport at a low cost while building their confidence and awareness.
It has proved very successful with classes for all ages at his gym and at local schools including Padstow, St Merryn and Trevisker.
Liam has competed in various events around the country. In September he won an international show in Manchester.
This week he competes in the Battle of Bournemouth Show, his eighth event. He will then take part in a world championship Thai-boxing show in Penzance in December.
Liam said: "I love boxing. It helps to keep me fit and I get to travel around and meet lots of people.
Liam is also seeking long-term sponsorship to help with travelling costs and to enable him to fulfil his dream of becoming a champion.
If you are interested in sponsoring Liam in return for advertising on clothing, banners and a website, please ring Steve on 07811 552906.
