After partner's swan-song Rambo needs a mate

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 09:00

A TROUBLESOME love-sick swan is frantically searching for a new mate after his long-term partner passed away.

Many visitors to Trelawney Garden Centre at Sladesbridge are familiar with Rambo, who shared the lake for many years with his mate Tuppence.

Unfortunately Tuppence died in September and since then Rambo has been in a real flap and is desperate for a new love.

The pair of black swans were unable to produce offspring so Rambo is now alone – and letting everyone know about it.

Since Tuppence died Rambo has been causing something of a commotion with loud noises and hectic flapping, but it may not be easy to find another black swan he will take to.

Rambo's sister Miss Muffit used to live with him but constant fighting meant she had to be rehomed in Lanivet.

Another swan was also released into the lake by the RSPCA but tough guy Rambo didn't like him either.

Now staff at the garden centre are considering what to do with the broken-hearted swan, with plans to either try to find another feisty bird for him to play with, or relocate him.

Nick Bacon from Trelawney said: "We knew something was up with Tuppence because she was hiding under some of the plants in the lake and wasn't paddling, just floating. We managed to catch her because she didn't even put up a fight.

"We rushed her to the vet but she died in his arms. We are not sure why she died; the vet said she seemed very healthy for her age. We didn't have a post-mortem examination because they are very expensive.

"The trouble we have with Rambo is that he doesn't like new swans or animals invading his water, so we are still unsure what to do. It would be great if we could find him another mate but he might not take to her. There is a place in Middlesex which is willing to have him but he would be missed. He is one of our main characters. If customers are in the conservatory having something to eat or drink he'll go right up to the window and start pecking. I just hope that there will be a happy ending for him."

Anyone who thinks that they may know of a black swan who would make an appropriate mate for Rambo, or can offer advice, is asked to contact Nick at Trelawney on 01208 893030.
