Falmouth fire rescue reinforces campaign

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 10:34

A Falmouth man is lucky to be alive after being overcome with smoke when fire broke out in the early hours this morning.

The rescue has reinforced the campaign to keep 24-hour fire cover in the town.

Fire crews were called to Swanpool Street just after 1am to reports of "smoke issuing" from the three-storey building.

Three occupants had managed to escape after being raised by their fire alarms.

However a male occupant on the second floor was still inside.

Crew members Roger Strick and Ben Short rescued him, bringing him out of the building through the window and down a ladder.

He was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske for treatment.

Crew manager Stuart Williams said: "The fire crew arrived within minutes and if we didn't have 24 hour cover the person would have lost his life."

The fire started in a tumble drier in the basement and was contained to that room, but smoke poured through the entire building.

Two appliances from Falmouth, along with a third from Redruth and some additional crew were called to the scene.
