Waterfront Crew ignore weather to play part in clean up at beach

Wednesday, November 05, 2008, 14:11

THE weather couldn't have been more atrocious, but the lashing rain failed to deter the young members of Falmouth's Waterfront Crew from their latest clean-up.

Nine youngsters, all pupils at Falmouth School, were joined at Castle Beach by neighbourhood beat manager, PC Andy Hocking, PCSO Bill Wood and volunteers from Seasalt.

The Seasalt store in Church Street has adopted Castle Beach in support of the Marine Conservation Society's campaign to keep the country's coastline clean. It holds regular beach cleans and this time enlisted the help of the Waterfront Crew, who have become renowned for their efforts in sprucing up the town.

"The beach was generally clean, but there was still a variety of debris to collect," said PC Hocking.

This included the usual plastics, aluminium cans, cigarette ends and even a dead squirrel.

"I think it is absolutely wonderful that the kids and the volunteers turned out on such a miserable day," added PC Hocking. "It was throwing it down and was by far the worst day of the winter so far.

"It was inspiring to see so many people coming together and working in partnership for the good of the community and to benefit the environment."
