Conor off to a good start in first race

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 15:40

IN his first serious race of the winter Conor Robinson, from Lanner, near Redruth, finished a fine third at the opening McCain UK Cross Challenge Series, in Gateshead.

Not even an 11-hour car journey to the north-east the day before could take the edge off the 14-year-old Cornwall AC runner as he mixed it with a top quality field to prove that he has now recovered from the injury problems that surfaced towards the end of the track season.

"I was very happy with that run," said Robinson.

"I am still getting back to fitness after injury and only been doing two or three weeks of proper training.

"I had done the Westward League as a warm-up but this was my first major race and it was great to have a blast and race everyone. I enjoyed it and it is something to build upon."

The Cleave brothers from Falmouth also made the long trip to Gateshead with Matt 28th and Ryan 33rd respectively in the Under 20 men's race.

Former Truro School student Katie Knowles finished eighth in the Under 20 women's race
