Surfing on sound waves

Tuesday, August 26, 2008, 17:01

IT'S fair to say that Surfstock – which takes place at the former SAS Ball site in St Agnes this Friday and Saturday – has the most interesting bill of any music event in Cornwall this year.

Some of the best acts to emerge in 2008 (Santogold, thecocknbullkid, Alphabeat and Lightspeed Champion) are joined by such varied musical treats as US disco duo Chromeo, new reggae star Natty, the Complete Stone Roses tribute and everyone's favourite eccentric John Otway.

Throw in headliners The Gossip and The Go! Team and all your favourite local bands and you have two days and several stages of loveliness.

My What's On tips for ones to catch over the weekend are The Loose Salute (what Neil Young would sound like if he lived in Kernow), Robots In Disguise (the finest femme electro pop), The Shoes (one of the UK's most underrated indie bands), and Electric City (three Duran Duran progeny and one Cornishman).

Here's the skinny:

The Main Peak – Where you can see the biggest acts of the day – a beautiful giant tent with many delights inside.

Friday: Gossip, Santogold, Chromeo, Black Lips, Robots In Disguise, Emmy The Great, Phantom Limb, The Complete Stone Roses, thecocknbullkid, Jamie Woon, DJ Andy Smith, compere Howard Marks.

Saturday: The Go! Team, Alphabeat, Lightspeed Champion, Natty, John Otway, The Heavy, The Shoes, Nathan 'Flutebox' Lee, The Clik Clik, Dead Kids. Vibes & Pressure feat Kofi, compere Howard Marks.

Local Heroes Stage – The South West's hottest acts battle it out for the overall title of Local Hero.

Friday: Astrofirs, Little Fish, Auction For The Promise Club, Call To Arms, Chasing Faces, iPony, My Elvis Blackout, Richie Thomas, The Reels, The U.P.S, Dan Crisp, Absent, The Sea and Rosie & the Goldbug.

Saturday: Electric City, I Say Marvin, High Voltage, Blindfold Garden, Cuba Cuba, The Dash, The Sycamores, Trump Card Sleeves, The Hulas, Jak the Disco, Severe Zero, Swim Team, The Van Daniels, Willie and The Bandits and The Heathens.

The Rabbit Hole – Falling somewhere between Monty Python, the X Factor and a badly out of control genetic engineering experiment, The Rabbit Hole is here to remind you of your own creativity and encourages you to get involved.

Friday: The Mosquitoes, The Mad Cows, Glass Shark, Death Ray Trebuchey, Bugga and The Loose Salute.

Saturday: Geoff Leopard, Dulwich Ukelele Club, The Mad Cows.

The Green Room – A delightful orchard of apples and audio serving up some golden delicious bands and the finest disc jockeys all day and all night.

Friday: Tom Laws, Kristoff, DJ Cornish, Tim Nice, Evil Genius, Le Gitane Branches.

Saturday: Louis Eliot, Ben Howard, Tim Nice, Evil Genius, Tom Laws, Kristoff, DJ Cornish, Le Gitane Branches.

Music Evolution – ME and co know how to throw a proper party, mixing up quality serious music with a real sense of humour and lack of pretension.

Residential Dance Home – Following a recent spate of over medication, the residents of a local care home have plied their nurses with booze and taken things into their own hands. Let the old folk take you into a fantastical disco dream land.

You can also expect The Launderetta, Get Waxy and the Surf on the Turf giant outdoor cinema.
