Brewery success

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 15:13

TWO of our Cornish brewers have enjoyed success at International Beer Challenge Awards, increasingly the high regard globally for our local brews.

St Austell Brewery's Admiral's Ale was voted the best packaged beer in the world in the competition.

The event, organised with Off Licence News, is the largest packaged beer competition in the world and saw UK brewing industry heavyweights including Fullers, Greene King and Shepherd Neame battling it out for the top spot.

Admiral's Ale won its class and then went on to be named overall supreme champion at the awards ceremony, held in London.

Roger Ryman, St Austell Brewery's director of brewing, said it was a fantastic result, adding: "It is a big thrill to have won such a top award and a great credit to the team for the way in which we are consistently producing top quality ales which are setting new standards in the brewing industry."

The International Beer Challenge attracts international entries and is supported by some of the world's biggest brewers. Beers are divided into 12 classes and rigorously judged and assessed on both taste and packaging by a panel of the industry's leading beer experts.

The award is the latest for Admirals Ale, which previously won two golds in a row at the Taste of the West Awards.

Admiral's Ale is a premium bottle conditioned ale originally brewed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805. The beer is made from Cornish Gold Malt — a unique malt created for St Austell Brewery by Tuckers Maltings which is made using 100% Cornish grown barley. Blended with both Styrian Golding and Cascade hops, the result is a deep bronze ale with a delicious rich biscuit flavour and a wonderful spicy aroma.

In the same competition, Sharp's Brewery's Honey Spice Wheat Beer was declared champion in the wheat beer class, following in the footsteps of the brewery's famous flagship beer Doom Bar, which scooped a Top 50 World Beer place in 2006.

Honey Spice (6% ABV) was also selected as a finalist in the Sainsbury's Beer Challenge 2008.

Honey Spice Wheat Beer, the brainchild of Sharp's head brewer, Stuart Howe, is brewed with Golding and Bobek hops, wheat and barley malts, and fermented with local honey.

Stuart said: "This success is fantastic for the brewery and great news for Cornish beer. The wealth of quality, natural ingredients available in Cornwall is key to the creative process of designing this winning beer.

"The honey comes from bees that collect pollen from the fields behind the brewery, and some of the malt is from the farm just across the valley."
