Choral rarity

The evening began with a rarity – apart from conductor Michael Edwards, I doubt that any of the participants or audience, myself included, had ever before heard Salieri's Mass in D, let alone performed it.
Edwards, working from an unwieldy handwritten score, having judiciously reallocated some voice parts to enhance the integrity of the work, did much to ensure that the most was made of the music.
However mannered the libretto of Purcell's Ode for St Cecilia's Day now seems, the composer's genius remains fresh and Michael Edwards expansive direction allowed it to shine, to the delight of the enthusiastic audience which had braved the elements to attend.
