Eddie Izzard talks to What's On

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 13:53

NOW Eddie Izzard is a Hollywood name, gaining an interview with the man is a lot harder than you would imagine, writes Lee Trewhela.

But one of the greatest stand-ups this country has ever spat forth, granted me a few minutes while travelling to the Truro show.

The first thing that hits you after realising that the voice on the other end of the phone is, well, that voice, is how enthusiastic and attuned he is to his favourite subjects which invariably come back to politics.

Now dividing his time between London and LA (largely due to the success of his American series, The Riches), he is delighted to have toured the country on the run-up to the election.

"To think that two little black girls will grow up in the White House – how amazing is that!

"Travelling across America I've noticed a real change of thinking among people. They are realising that conservative thinking keeps things the same, so there has been a real sea change towards more of a democratic outlook."

It is still European politics that truly interests Eddie, who famously performed his show entirely in French.

"We really have to work together in Europe – no one really argues for it in this country, so I will!"

Eddie had obviously done his homework – he seemed quite aware that Cornwall was one of the poorest regions in the continent and that we often stand alone not only in Europe but in our own country. Facts he used in his stage show later that night.

Eddie told me before the show that he was seriously considering entering European politics, and with his strong socialist views and sheer charisma it wouldn't be beyond the realms of imagination to one day see him as president of the continent. A loveable, rambling fop of a president, mind.
