FOLK fans should be in for an atmospheric evening when Devon singer-songwriter Seth Lakeman brings his four-piece band to the Minack Theatre for a special performance next week.

The rising star of the folk world hopes the spectacular cliff-top venue will provide the perfect backdrop for his latest crop of songs and plans to film the event for a DVD release.

"It really is such an amazing venue," said Seth, as he prepared to fly out to Bergen in Norway for the latest date in his current tour.

"I have been writing a lot and the new songs have a coastal theme so it just felt right to play the Minack.

"We are one of the first to play and record there – it is a real privilege and we are all pretty excited about it – let's just hope we get some good weather."

Seth has been credited with taking folk to a new audience with his rhythmic, urgent performances and lyrically engrossing albums.

His critically acclaimed third album, Poor Man's Heaven, charted at number eight in the UK on its release last June, quite an achievement for a folk artist.

Seth, whose journalist father Geoff and his grandfather hail from St Just, draws much of his inspiration from the West Country with songs about a wishing well at Madron and a Zennor man who sold his soul to the devil.

He is also a supporter of the RNLI, helping to launch SOS Day after releasing a single, Solomon Browne , which commemorated the 1981 Penlee lifeboat disaster in which 16 people lost their lives.
