Surfers Against Sewage launch Crowdfunding appeal
A charity from St Agnes is launching an online appeal to fund the UK’s biggest beach clean.
In a bid to tidy Cornwall’s coastline after the wettest January on record, eco-stalwarts, Surfers Against Sewage, have started an online Crowdfunding campaign to raise money for their county-wide spring beach clean initiative in March.
The Marine Litter Crisis Appeal aims to raise a minimum of £5,000 to help train, equip and support more than 3,000 community volunteers remove a total of 10 tonnes of waste from the country’s coast.
Recent storms and an absence of seasonal council beach cleaning means that vast quantities of plastic and marine litter are lying on Cornwall’s beaches.

Typical examples of marine litter include rubbish from beach users, sewage-related debris, waste from commercial shipping, nets and fish boxes from fishing vessels and medical waste.
Marine litter not only affects recreational use of beaches but also impacts on vital ocean ecosystems.
Hugo Tagholm, SAS chief executive said: “The marine litter crisis is a catastrophic environmental issue hitting beautiful beaches right around the UK. It poses an unprecedented threat to marine wildlife, coastal habitats and our enjoyment of these unique spaces.
"The SAS Big Spring Beach Clean empowers communities and educates the public on how we can all play our part in turning the tide or marine litte, please pledge your support today!”
The Big Spring Beach Clean will take place in various locations between March 28 and 31.
