If you have been lucky enough to get among the fun, clean surf this week, let me take this opportunity to tip my hat to you.

Under normal circumstances, the jealously felt from missing out on several days on sunny, shoulder-high waves due to being stuck in an office on deadline would prevent me from applauding anyone else's water-time but, quite frankly, it has been so cold this week that I have been happy to have an excuse not to put on an icy wetsuit.

Mind you, even watching clean waves from the warmth of my office has made a welcome change to watching the stormy, onshore junk that plagued most of January. The light easterly winds that groomed the small swell into fun little peelers all week travelled to the South West from Siberia, which is why the nice conditions coincided with such low temperatures.

One lad who I'm sure has been much braver than me this week is Ollie Turrel. The eight-year-old from Hayle made the news this week thanks to his surfing talents. Surfing since he was 18 months old, Ollie has already won a couple of competitions – including beating father Richie to first place in fun surfing competition "the Swellboard Classic" when he was just six.

Grandfather Mervyn Sullivan, from Hayle, said: "It was a fancy dress surfing competition but it is still serious surfing and Ollie beat a lot of people, including his dad. He is probably the youngest surfing champion in the UK."

Now the Connor Downs Primary School pupil's surfing skills have put him in the focus of a different spotlight. Ollie is going to appear in the next episode of the TV series Cornwall with Caroline Quentin on Monday.

Mervyn said: "They had an underwater camera and they are supposed to have some wonderful shots."

There was also good news for longboarders this week, with the British Longboard Union (BLU) announcing that the National Trust will be its Environmental Partner for the British Longboard Championships 2012. The 2012 British Longboard Championships will contain four events, two of which will be on the National Trust beaches of Woolacoombe and Crantock.

BLU founder, Minnow Green, said about the new partnership: "Our members are very excited about the possibilities presented by this new venture with the National Trust.

"Not only are the beaches the Trust has been able to offer us for this series the envy of surfers everywhere, but the Trust shares our belief, and that of most surfers, that the coast is to be enjoyed but also cared for by those who use it."

It's looking like both of those beaches and many more will have plenty of swell hitting them as we head into next week.

In the meantime, today should see a small, slightly messy wave on the north coast, with the chance of some surf on the south coast tomorrow when the wind swings more northerly, no doubt bringing with it some more bitterly cold weather!
