MUSIC brought a Tintagel couple together more than 60 years ago, and they have now celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Bob and Sheila Flower met when they attended the Band of Hope, a Christian and temperance society, at the nearby hamlet of Trewarmett.

Bob had moved down from London with his family in 1940 after their home was destroyed by a direct hit from a bomb during the Blitz.

They moved to Tintagel, where his sisters were already evacuated, and Bob went to Sir James Smith's Grammar School where a friend, who was Sheila's cousin, suggested he should go to the Band of Hope. "Sheila Smith played the organ and her grandmother was president," said Bob, 84. "I was interested in singing and music brought us together."

They set off on their honeymoon from Camelford Station, closed many years ago, and stayed the night in London before going across to Belgium to stay with distant relatives in Brussels.

They have four children, two boys and two girls, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

They ran the supermarket in Tintagel for many years, and Bob served as a district councillor for 40 years and parish councillor for 50; he remains vice-chairman at Tintagel. He and Sheila, 80, both play short mat bowls for Cornwall.

The secret of a long marriage? "A lot of give and take, and having something we both enjoy, which is music. Now we're into short mat bowling, and we love going on cruises," said Bob.
